Superstitious Women: Race, Magic, and Medicine in Egypt (1875-1950)

Using amuletic objects as archival materials, my research reconstructs the raced and gendered magico-medical lifeworlds of non-literate women healers in Egypt and highlights their role in developing global medical and anthropological expertise in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
